ABOUT

The Department of Special Education in Istanbul Medeniyet University consists of the following divisions: Teaching for Students with Visual Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education and Teaching Students with Intellectual Disability.

One of the targets of our department is to educate special education teachers to have adequate professional qualifications needed for providing evidence-based education for the development, integration to society and independent living of individuals with special needs. Moreover, our department intends to provide educational services on needed topics for the professionals related to individuals with special needs from different disciplines. Our department aims to increase the special education knowledge, skills, and professional competencies of teachers by giving lectures in other teaching programs within the scope of inclusion/integration-oriented services.

In addition, our department has the aim of conducting qualified national and international research and development activities and projects focused on community services. For this purpose, the special education department has opened an interdisciplinary master's program with the Basic Education Department to train researchers, experts, and academics who can conduct research in the field of special education and have knowledge about different disciplines. The Early Childhood Special Education Master's Program has started to admit students in the 2019-2020 Fall Semester and continues to actively recruit students every fall semester. More detailed information about the Early Childhood Special Education Master's Program can be found here.

Also, there are voluntary and awareness activities aiming at creating social responsibility in special education services.

Finally, with the programs such as Erasmus+, Farabi , and Mevlana, we try to reach the goal of “internationalization” by cooperating with international institutions.
